Our History

A Legacy of Football, Faith & Community

The 2025/26 season marks the 25th anniversary of the Ilford and District Churches Football League (IDCFL) a milestone for a league that has united faith-based communities through grassroots football at Wanstead Flats.

Our Origins

Founded in 2001 by Edward Caton and his son Jonathan Caton, IDCFL was born from a simple but powerful vision: to create a competitive football league for men who attend church on Sundays. The goal was to provide a space where church-connected teams could enjoy the game while upholding Christian values.

From just seven teams in its first season, the league quickly grew thanks to its high standard of play and strong community ethos. Early teams included Redbridge FC, City Gates FC, Woodgrange FC, Havering FC, and others like Canfield Road, East Ham Elim, and St Marks, who helped shape the league’s founding principles and Christian framework.

More Than Just Football

One of IDCFL’s most impactful innovations was the introduction of ‘Team Talk’ a monthly pre-match gathering open to all teams. These sessions fostered unity, mutual respect, and spiritual reflection. It was during one of these gatherings that Stephen McQueon came to faith, later becoming a Pastor at City Gates Church. The league was not only a place to play football it was, by God’s grace, fulfilling a greater purpose.

In a memorable Team Talk, then Chairman Jonathan Caton challenged the league to “Raise a Standard” a call to excellence in conduct, participation, and reputation. This became a rallying cry, symbolised by flags displayed at every matchday as a weekly reminder of the league’s mission and values.

Growth & Evolution

The mid-2000s brought change and expansion. New clubs like All Saints, AS Colts, Salway, GEVIC (now ANM FC), ANC FC, and Emmanuel FC joined, growing the league to 23 teams and introducing a two-division format with promotion and relegation.

Under the creative leadership of Andy Colthart and the support of Emmanuel Church, the league underwent a branding refresh introducing a new logo, website, and stronger visual identity.

Len Ruddock, manager of Bridge FC (formerly Redbridge), added to the league’s culture with Mullet & Chips a humorous Facebook fanzine that later evolved into a YouTube channel featuring matchday interviews.

Looking Ahead

Under current Chairman Kelvin Toku, IDCFL continues to evolve. Now affiliated with the FA, the league has begun live-streaming select matches with commentary, bringing grassroots football to a wider audience.
